Just received word that Walmart's Super Center plans have just been withdrawn. In a press release today, Walmart said the costs were more than they anticipated and they made the decision to withdraw their plans.
This leaves us with more bad news on the economic development front. The anticipated other businesses that would of come had the super center been built would of help us out in our residential/commercial mix of real estate we now have.
Where this leaves the Manchester Road improvements and the bonding that was approved for this roadway will be the next discussion councilors will be talking about.
Seems like the news keeps getting worse in the town of Derry
Unless of course, you were one of the opponents of the project. Then you should be happy I guess.
Question is now. How are we creating an environment that is positive for economic development?

Let's hope the tides will begin to turn beginning next Tuesday, March 11th. Please get out and VOTE!
BC, Why dont the council take a ride to the town of Chester and find out how they keep thier budget in tune without the big box stores and a half a dozen drug stores srewing up the landscape.
HOW ABOUT THIS MATH.
More big stores = more police ,more crusers, more fireman, more fire trucks, more employees spending foolishly, more ten week vacations and more lifetime employment = open your wallets taxpayers.
anon 7:23,
Thats an easy one. First Chester's politician have not sold out the town like the Derry politicians did in the 80's. Derry was flooded with apartments from Franklin St Ext, Fairways, Linlew Dr- Which in turned brought many families w/children into Derry. More people=more services. Now Derry cannot go back and erase housing and in fact has more low & mid income housing than Manchester per capita!- Hence, we are stuck with higher taxes. The question now becomes- How does Derry lower taxes? You got it- Bring in Business. Anyone who thinks Derry can revert back to a sleepy town of 10,000 is a Dreamer. Chester and Surrounding towns such as Auburn should shoulder some of the new low/mid income housing in the future. Remember one thing Derry is the 4th largest community in NH.
bc
I wouldn't say Walmart backing out has anything to do with the way Derry runs it political agenda. We did choose to be proactive with the roads without them. Which showed to me we were committed to bringing business to town. I believe this time it has to do with the economy. We are not the only store that Walmart decided not to build. Let's face it we have plenty of superstores too close to justify building another one. (I don't care for Walmart but I do shop there since it is the only store in this town.)
I suppose we could think of this positively, this will give the town more time to shape it future and come to grips with how it it will evolve.
Without Walmart's promised contribution to the Route 28 improvements, what happens to the project? Is it also dead?
to anon7:23 The solution is to bring in economic growth opportunity which will assist in managing the taxes our citizens pay. In my opinion Derry has much more to offer than surrounding towns. It unfortunate we lost Walmart. Anyone who doesnt like the life in Derry has the freedom to move out and the chance to vote in the next election. We are paying for the mistakes of the 80s and the problem with taxes is here and needs to be addressed. Having grown up in Salem in the 50 and 60 Derry has to find a mix of business we can attract and will want to work with. kmc
Amen BC! The town is loaded with multi family buildings that are also loaded with their children which loads the school system. For anon 7:23, Chester keeps their taxes so low because if your house is on fire the firemen come from home. Another perk to living in Chester is that if they can't find a Police Officer to fill a shift, there isn't one! That means that if someone is breaking in your house and you call 911, an Officer has to come from home or you have to wait for the State Police or another town to come to your aid.
HOW ABOUT THIS FOR MATH
Get the apartment and multi family building owners that offer all the section 8 housing to pay their fair share of the burden and none of this will be a problem! Go sit outside the Fairways and watch the multiple kids that come out of most of the apartments! You'll figure it out then!
I found it funny the comments about Chester. Has any one actually compared tax bills between Chester, Derry, Londonderry, Hampstead. You will find that most of these towns are very comparable if not even more expensive than Derry with less services. You people dont see the big picture. If it werent for these people who live in Chester paying the same amount of taxes if not higher that travel to Derry to spend there Money this town would be alot worse off. By the way, the defination of life time means that these people will continue to have jobs until they die. I dont belive that this is the case. Again Kevin Coyle uses words and phrases that people actually belive. People use some common scene here stop listening to the BS and find out the truth.
Cut back on police and Firefighters, oh ya what a noval Idea. I bet you have survived a house Fire or could hold your breath for 10+ minuets while waiting for rescue personal to arrive. While your at it tell the next person that is braking into your home or sexually assulting a loved one that it's Ok you have plenty of time before a police officer shows up. People that live in this town that dont relize how good we have it compared to other communities should start doing their homework.
BC-anon 10:21 asked a great question, now that the project has lost its financial underpinnings is the TIF dead?
anon 10:21 and 5:19,
It is a good question. The facts are that a motion was made to establish a TIF district. So, yes it is a TIF district. The other part to this is the bonding. We approved a bond for the widening of Manchester Rd BUT we did not authorize it as of this date. Councilor Coyle made a motion to spend 500K of general fund monet to pay for the intial engineering for the project which some money has been expended to date. This is where we stand as of 3/4/08. Could things change? Stay tuned.
BC,
I honestly will say that things would be better in this town if ALL town officials lived in this town and payed realestate taxes in the town of Derry . NOT CONNETICUT ,AURBURN, and all the other towns which our officials that run the town live in.
NOW THAT WOULD BE AN ORDINENCE TO WORK ON OR ENFORCE.
IF YOU WORK AS A TOWN EMPLOYEE OR HAVE GUANTEED LIFETIME EMPLOYMENT , YOU MUST LIVE IN DERRY OR OWN PROPERTY IN DERRY. I bet the council cant get this one rolling.
AND THEN THESE NICE FOLKS CAN TAKE SOME OF THEIR TEN WEEKS VACATION AND MOVE HERE.
It might be possible to do something like that with future employees but how might one force all current employees to move here??? If the Town Admin was on the ball, he would rent a room somewhere and then he would be a resident of Derry! Your welcome Gary!
To anon 7:17, if you want to complain about the perks that some of these employees get than you should be willing to do the job yourself!
ok, I am getting tired of hearing people say that these firemen deserve all they are getting and if we don't like it then we should perform this job ourselves.
The fact is they made a conscious choice and made this their career, just as someone who chooses to be a teacher, deli clerk, or entrepreneur. I feel I do not have to give my arm, my leg and one of my children because they made this choice. You know the pay scale before you took the job.
Don't get me wrong I admire the work these folks do I just can't continue to concince myself all these vacation days and lifetime employment is fair.
Again with the "lifetime employment" crap... That contract language DOES NOT EXIST! Do a little research before you write in this blog from now on.
If the council cut the pay of the firefighters, not one would leave. The job is too lucrative. The tactic of gathering for the purpose of harassing volunteer public servants is very unprofessional. people should be fired for such conduct. I hope council members comes out publically in support of their other council members. The Town can't be pushed around. My thin support of the union members has now taken a turn.
Annon 9:10
Doesn't if you are employed before a certain year then you may not be laid off count as lifetime employement? Lets face it how many firemen do you know that were canned? To me that is basically forever. I understand that this was in the contract from the East Derry firemen contract(is this true?), but if it is trying to become an option for the whole dept then i have issues with this.
If you could enlighten the situatuion then I am willing to listen to what exactly the issues are and why the majority of the councilors shot down the contract.
Get All the facts about what really happened that night before people start pointing fingers. Look at Kevin Coyles track record, he is pretty good at twisting words and filling the blanks, I am not a Firefighter but I was there and I know for a fact that the Firefighters NEVER EVER said any of the phrases that they are being accused off. The truth will soon be told and the public will learn the truth about Kevin Coyle. Please people dont always belive everything that your being told. Find out the truth!
anon 9:10 those words do not need to exist. "no layoff" conveys almost the exact same meaning. I can see that you believe that you can fool some of the people some of the time. Very slick.
Is it true that the FFs were at the bar before and after the Tuesday night incident. Don't try to confuse the issues. What happened tuesday was indecent.
BC,
THE UNION LEADER HAS STATED A THREATENING ATTITUDE COMING FROM OUR FIRE DEPT.THERE IS A TELEVISION SHOW WITH BOB SAGET ON TV LIKE THAT. ONE VS 100
I GUESS IF THE SHOW AIRED IN DERRY NH, BOB WOULD SAY: OK MR. COUNCIL ,"DO YOU WANT THE MONEY OR THE MOB".
Now that's funny, one of our rollie pollie Derry firefighters driving by someone's house trying to look bad to a prosecutor?
I thought at a minimum fire fighters had to pass a reasoning proficiency test.
If things went down as reported, looks like a chance to downsize the department by one. Hey, it's a start.
I thought you didn't allow personal attacks in this blog.
anon 3:41,
What personal attacks are you talking about?
Brian,
"Rollie Pollie firefighters"
That's a bit uncalled for.
Maybe the same "anonymous" that wrote this would be willing to speak to the Council and request the firefighters be allowed to workout at the gym again.
anon 6:45,
I guess knowing how fit the guys and gals on the fire dept keep themselves, I just thought this was someone who just doesn't like the fire dept. I took it as tongue in cheek. Believe me, some of the other stuff that does not get in is far worse then I will share. ( not specifically anyone or any group in particular)
