Unacceptable!

I 've seen this same story over and over, many times in newspapers and on television about someone with multiple DWI charges being caught once again Driving while under the influence. I'm always saying to myself when are the laws going to be tough enough before someone goes out and kills someone. Well today we learn that both the drunk driver and the person who almost got killed were both from Derry.
How in the world, in this day and age do we as a society give people who have lose their licence, a licence to go out and act irresponsibly and maybe kill a person today, or maybe a family enjoying a vacation. This is ludicrous.
One of our boys in blue is very lucky to be alive today! We pray for his quick and speedy recovery.
Officer Robert Moore was on special detail in windham were he was directing traffic on Rte 28 close by to Rte 111 when he was struck. The reports say he slipped in and out of conscioness and he was med-flighted to a Boston hospital were he is recovering.
As for the fate of the drunk driver- we must make sure she is not able to get behind the wheel of a vehicle again. Remember driving is not a right it is a privileged and when you abuse the privilege and endangers other lives, the laws should be strengthened to make sure this kind of thing does not happen again.
What are your thoughts?

BC,
Goodmorning, I have got to say you are right. Having our guys in blue standing in the road while thousands of drunks pass them by everyday is Unaccepttable.

This is what I think and have seen. Just open the union leader on any given day and check out DWI revocations.Sit and watch some of these stiffs going in to buy booze at our many gas stations or markets. Most of the time, the paper bags end up on the front seat.

BC, If our wounderful state cared at all about the safety of law enforcement and the safety of citizens it would not be in the booze business.

Some "idiot" in Concord had this bright idea to put alcohol super stores on major roadways coming and going in our state,AND THEN RUN SALES FLYERS IN THE NEWS PAPER.

Do you know why? "Our" wounderful state cares more about money than saftey.

Wh3,
Thanks for the post. Although i may agree with most of what you posted, As far as the state being in the alcolhol business, to me its not the states fault it is the persons fault. Just like people against gun control-they claim we should not sell guns because of all the shootings and crime and robberies. Same applies here- it's not the gun it's the person behind the gun- it's not the alcohol it's the person consuming the alcohol

BC,

You are correct it is the person behind the gun or the bottle but, we dont have gun shops coming and going on our interstate highways run by the state.THANK GOD FOR THAT.

Minors and crazys can go in and buy a bottle, its done every minute every day. There are back ground checks for firearms "if" the state does their job and again, this is not done on 93 or 95.

This is clearly a tragedy. It is also something that is not an isolated incident. We've got these steps that happen in order

1. alcohol is purchased
2. alcohol is consumed
3. more alcohol is consumed to the point of intoxication
4. person drives a vehicle while intoxicated
5. someone gets injured or killed

I'd argue that steps one, two, and probably three are unavoidable. Step 4 doesn't always lead to people getting killed, but how do we avoid taking that chance?

The obvious answer is to avoid driving a car if you've had too much to drink. From a practical standpoint, how will that work? As far as I know, Derry doesn't have any public transportation. I don't see taxi cabs waiting to pick people up anywhere in Derry. Does anyone know if there are taxi cabs that you can call in Derry?
The only other option is walking or bicycling (probably still not a good idea if you've been drinking, though a 25 pound uncontrollable vehicle is better than 2500 pounds).

You say that driving a car is a privilege, but how would you realistically get by without a car?
Instead of a 5 minute car ride to the grocery store, you've got three or four 15 minute bicycle rides. (From experience, I can say that most retail stores don't appreciate people coming in on roller blades.) If you drive an hour to work, that's probably a 5 or 6 hour bicycle ride. The sprawl that is the big shopping areas of Derry and Londonderry are not geared toward people that aren't driving cars. The only people I know that don't drive cars around here are either children (whose parents drive them around) or elderly people (who no longer work and get car rides on occasion from their friends and family).

Note that the gun vs alcohol analogy breaks down here a bit. I can make alcohol in my basement using very simple ingredients (people have been doing this for thousands of years). However, if you gave me the raw materials to make a hand gun, I'd be hard pressed to figure out how to make a gun out of them.
