It is sad to see the state of the cemetery in East Derry. One would think with town employees manning the gates that the place would be cleaned up since the ice storm/ winter. With Memorial Day just down the road, I hope the place gets cleaned up.

I agree about the cemetery. I just found a website devoted to that cemetery and their efforts to clean it up and preserve it.

Looks like anyone can help out.

Watching the council meeting this evening one thing is clear, Neil Wetherbee is not helping to support a better Derry.

He speaks in circles with no clear logic to many of his points. For example when he presented his reasoning to drop the second public forum which left everyone scratching their heads, even reporters.

Then tonight I was surprised to see Neil vote no, on releasing funds for the rail trail who's team has quickly fullfilled their end of the fundraising, because Neil could not take the word of town professionals that his concerns are unwarranted. Neil, by delaying the project funding release it may have openned the possibility of failing to take advantage of a seasonal cost advantage. Not that tough to grasp....is it?

Nonetheless, it's great to see the council moving forward on this project despite the two naysayers that simply just don't get it.

Anon. 10:31,
So we’re supposed to implicitly trust department heads when it comes to an issue you are apparently in favor of? This despite the fact that the town has spent 6 months trying (unsuccessfully) to clear environmental hurdles with the state and has no solid cost on the final cost of the project.

However when these same department heads present us with union contracts, budget proposals, personnel recommendations and other such items (and I’ll go out on a limb here by assuming you would likely not be in favor of a number of them), then all of a sudden its entirely appropriate to question, scrutinize and downright micromanage.

It’s exactly this kind of duplicity and hypocrisy that has got this town to the place it is today on so many issues. Nowhere!

For the record my objections have nothing to do with the Derry Rail Trail Alliance and I stated that clearly in my questioning. The fact is we have no firm cost on the completion of this project. In my opinion that is fault of the DPW who is project managing this. I’m hopeful that the unknown cost and state environmental issues pan out OK. But this is not what the town agreed to a year ago which is why we needed a new motion to basically change the agreement.

And as a final note, I’m a big boy. I made points, raised my questions and the vote went the way it went. I’m fine with that because that’s the process and from of government we have. Unlike some members of the public and even some on the council, you won’t be hearing me incessantly whining for months on end because things didn’t go my way. Time to move on.

nfw - Out of your entire response the only thing you needed to say was paragraph four. The rest of your response was condescending, insulting and negative. Why would you do that?

For future reference if you feel the need to respond to each and every blog entry or letter to the newspaper about comments you made or the way you voted you may want to try doing it with a little more finesse and it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to table the name calling. You certainly won't be winning over citizens or your peers by using phrases such as "incessantly whining". You're always going to get people who complain and criticize, take it for what it is but as a sitting counselor it may be a little more proactive if you focused on how to move the town forward on issues so we're "somewhere" rather than take on the same negative attitude that you so often put other people down for by saying we're "nowhere".

Anon 4:12, from what perspective do you see Neil Wetherbee condescending?

Pathetically entertaining, yes. But condescending, that does not compute. Near impossible to fathom unless he's walking the dog.

NFW, i agree with your last sentence, it is time for you to move on.

Anon 5:56 - I get the condescending part i.e. "And as a final note, I’m a big boy....Unlike some members of the public and even some on the council, you won’t be hearing me incessantly whining for months on end because things didn’t go my way" seems somewhat condescending to me. What the heck does "Near impossible to fathom unless he's walking the dog" mean?

NFW,

In all honesty you were right to question, but I am surprised that you would post blame toward the DPW for the lack of preparedness of this particular project.
This is not the first project the Derry DPW has managed, and its actually quite small comparatively speaking. The fact of the matter is the Rail Trail people spearheaded this, the majority of the Town Council supports it, and the Town's Department Heads get to answer all the questions related to the project.
For the record, I would be much more concerned about the perpetual care costs such as, policing, graffiti covering, pavement maintenance, brush removal, and of course liability, than I am about the initial "Final Cost". But then again that falls on the taxpayers.

12:31PM, don't be surprised. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Neil often has a tendency to speak before he thinks.

MUCH BEYOND A POOCH IT GETS NATURALLY MORE DIFFICULT FOR NEIL TO BE CONDECENDING.

ACTUALLY, KINDA FUNNY.

There he goes again with the flip flop.

FLIP:
When the department heads come in front of the Council with bloated and wasteful contracts and budgets not a peep is heard from NW. No questions, no issues, no problems.

BUT YET

FLOP:
When it comes to the Rail Trail we get, “So we’re supposed to implicitly trust department heads”

Can’t have it both ways kid!

Come on 10:42 be fair to NFW.
He does generally what he's told.
He gets into trouble when he shoots from the hip.
Come to think of it, that's most of the time.
One term and out.
