BC,
It seems as though Derry isn't the place to be for WalMart.

For those of you not following the economic growth in So NH, Walmart is moving forward with its plans to build a new supercenter in Plaistow on the Sanborn Candies property.

Not having a new Walmart is not a big loss for Derry, it's that we aren't receiving any other offers for the site on Ashleigh Drive that has me worried.

BC, do you know if the town is actively in pursuit of developers for this and other properties in Derry?

I'm not a huge fan of this new bailout/stimulus plan that Obama has, but if congress is going to put it through, shouldn't Derry be submitting a list of infrastructure projects that need financial assistance? Rt 28? Exit 4A? I know Salem and other communities have put together lists, and even made public comments about their projects.

If Town officials just sit on the sidelines and wait, other communities around us will get a piece of the pie while we sit back go hungry. What is Derry doing to obtain some of this money?

BC said...

Celtic,
Yes the town has a "wish" list made... Rte 28, 4A, and sewer extention for By-pass 28. Not sure exactly how much we end up with, however the list is made.

Anonymous said...

Derry blogger wish list
I'm still wishing to start up DWSA (Derry Water Skiing Association). Maybe I should contact the Obama administration. I'll bet I could get it put in the bailout package.
Everything else is in there!!!

Anonymous said...

BC,

Exactly who made this list? We are talking about economic stimulus, what is sewer on the bypass going to do to stimulate business. Why not sewer up Rt 28 towards Windham and help develop those parcels. Exit 4A does not benefit Derry, its a great boost to Londonderry since most of the land that would become accessible is in Londonderry. So yet again, lets spend money which should be used to boost Derry's economy and benefit other towns.

Anonymous said...

4A and Route 28.... 2 out of three is a pretty good score for the good old boys network. Congratulations, but you missed an opportunity to put a unneeded firestation on the list.

Anonymous said...

Let's not be fooled...

KC and his Corp. have been purchasing land along the 4A corridor since these talks started.

Conflict of interest...I think so!

Look at the county deeds online and see for yourself.

Anonymous said...

Nice try 11:07. You see KC votes against 4A and therefore against his own financial self interest. With his investments he is of course betting on the stupidity of his fellow council members. I think he will will that bet.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:07

I was shocked to see how many tax liens KC has had on his properties in Derry. What kind of Councilor is this? He'd be perfect for the Obama administration!

Don't forget to look up a few of his corporations on nhdeeds.com
HICO Development
Super Bee Construction
Coyle and Shriber Real Estate Management Company

Anonymous said...

maybe more drug stores and gyms
and i almost forgot dunkin donuts will create jobs!

Anonymous said...

If that's true about KC he's never going to make any money over there because 4A will never happen.

Only a fool would move a buisness to this town or invest in any commercial or other property here.

BC,

What do you think about the Londonderry firemans union and Derry arguing over turf on west broadway and nashua rd. (so much for mutual aid).

I guess the 911 coordinators cant agree who to send . How about who is closest to the fender bender.

Makes one wonder why this issue only comes up when overtime is cut!Maybe we should get out of the ambulance business.

Now these merchants may have to get another postal address, change their business cards ,stationary, signs, and whatever just to please fire unions and someones ego.

When it comes to overtime the brother stuff goes right out the window. My DAD always said money is the "route of all evil".

Come on guys , just send the bill to route 102 number -----

Anonymous said...

Celtic,
Please ask Janet Fairbanks. Apparently it is she that knows what jobs are best for Derry (no for Walmart). So she is the best person in Town Politics to answer such worldly questions.

The so called stimulus package does nothing to infuse money into the system right now.
It is disguised as a stimulus package however it is really a spending spree on a credit card.

There isn't a "turf war" between the Derry and Londonderry Fire Unions. The unions have nothing to do with who responds to calls and where. I beg someone to give an example of where an issue would've taken place. You are going to have to try harder to stir the pot on this one.

Anonymous said...

You people are incredible. You blame Obama for any local problems, comparing him to Coyle. Grow up! Democrats are not your enemies, your closed small minds are!

Anonymous said...

I have nothing against Obama or the obamanation of a bill the dems just passed. OBAMA and the DEMS are going to SAVE THE WORLD!!! Unless you work for a living.

GOD HELP US ALL

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 12:23 that's what all the democrats do when they are faced with the truth. They can't make a good argument so they resort to name calling.

As for me, I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed democrat!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with 12:23. The Republicans ran this country into the ground. Its funny now that instead of embracing change, some continue to hold onto right wing propaganda. I am a proud liberal, with a son serving in the mideast, so do not tell me I have to tow the Republican line of fertlizer. The economy went south on W.'s watch, but you do not want to give Obama a chance to implement change.

Anonymous said...

2:36 nice try, telling 12:23 that he/she does not possess the wits to discuss politics with you. Thats real open minded of your republican mind. I guesss you learned that line from watching hours of Fox News. The more you talk about witless dems, the more you show your own shallow viewpoints.

Anonymous said...

I'll keep my money and my freedom. You can keep the change!!

Anonymous said...

When the economy went south who really was in charge? Maybe it was a Democrat house and Senate. When the housing market went south you have to look no further than Democrat from Ma. Barney Frank and Democrat from Ct. Chris Dodd and the bad guidelines of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And I know George Bush and Halliburton made that plane crash in Buffalo. I think they are also responsible for the wildfires in Austrailia. Watch out it's supposed to snow tomorrow night it could be their evil weather machine aimed right at you. Oh to bring back the glory days of the Carter administration!!

Yet another economic development possibility slipping through Derry's fingers. Looks like Tupelo Music Hall is going to stay in Londonderry. This had been discussed earlier on this blog as a real opportunity for Derry. Looks like the naysayers were right!

Tupelo Music Hall

pinkerton has got a 800+ seat theater
makes no sense to build a new tupelo in derry. however derry likes to double and triple businesses

gyms, dd, drug stores, tanning shops....

Anonymous said...

We have gone off course. Its supposed to be a blog on local issues, but its turned into a us vs. them (Republicans vs. Democrats) mud sling.

BC said...

Yes, Lets all get back to the local politics..

Anonymous said...

Thanks Brian for putting this back on track. We also can do with out the bashing of our council in areas outside their role on the team. If you have a grip with anyone ask the person. Im sick of hearing anonymous people attack others. Get spine.

Anonymous said...

To anon 11:00

I agree that Tupelo may not be a great fit for Derry with an 800 seat theater 1 mile up the road.

However, a community with over 35,000 residents needs to have 3 or more businesses that provide the same service. How long would the line be to check-out at Shaw's?...to get on the treadmill at Gravity Fitness?...to get a medium regular at Dunkin Donuts?...to get a pizza delivered from Palermo's?

Clearly, Derry is able to support all of these service oriented businesses. The key is to try to bring in other forms of commerce and industry as well. I don't have the answer on how to do this. I can just hope that our leaders and hired-help can figure it out.

Tupelo has done this a few times before. He makes big plans that never materialize.

Just another poor Derry Taxpayer said...

9:13

I can not for the life of me see how Tupelo will benefit Derry at all.
Or for that matter how any business will benefit Derry.
What, a few dollars more in tax money. What about the costs of services for these entities?
Not cost effective in my opinion at all.
Then again what do I know, I only can compare places with businesses and their tax rates. Doing this I come to the conclusion that increase of business is justFOOL's Gold.

Anonymous said...

Derry Taxpayer,
Wouldn't you like to see a local show at Tupelo's right here in Derry? The taxes generated are not anywhere as valuable as quality of life.

Anonymous said...

BC Congratulations on your votes reinforcing the hiring freeze. We rarely agree but you should be praised when you get it right. That news about the $1.9 million reduced money from Concord is very scarey.

Isn't the administrator responsible for the delivery of products that the town has purchased? Is the 4A study an exception? Why does the council tolerate Stenhouse refusing to directly answer questions on the status of this study? He spends his time chasing hot dog vendors and defending piles of sand from elderly but a $1 million study seems to have slipped his mind.

Anonymous said...

What are you expectations for the upcoming budget season? The tax cap allows for a percentage increase. Will the Council being in a budget for next year that raises taxes right up to the limit of the cap increase? Level funded? Reduce the rate? Due you expect a reduction in staff for the new fiscal year? Keep the hiring freeze? Lots of questions.

Just another poor Derry Taxpayer said...

4:43
not really.
I have a car and like to drive so I would not mind going to Londonderry.

Some may argue that a show a Tupelo is boring and a waste of time.

Anonymous said...

I've been slow on my newspaper reading, but i wanted to send out kudos to john burtis for his column in the nutfield news regarding the t.a.'s living arrangement. now could you do some investigating into the business development coordinator? word has it she's not been seen/heard from in some time and is now collecting disability. what's wrong with this picture? what are we getting for that dollar? can you find out john?

Anonymous said...

I am no fan of Coyle or Fairbanks, but I have to take issue with Wetherbee's letter to the editor in today's Nutfield News. Taking shots via letters in the paper is unprofessional, as well as in poor taste. I usually side with Wetherbee on the issues but am disappointed in his actions. I will have to reevaluate my opinion of him as a counselor.

Anonymous said...

Taxpayer,
What you find boring at Tupelo someone else may treasure. Everyone has different tastes. The surrounding business' could benefit from a local venue like Tupelo's. People go for dinner and/or a drink before and after the shows. Why not have that opportunity in Derry?

Just another poor Derry Taxpayer said...

12:53

Someone going to dinner does not benefit me or anyone else in Derry.
The state gets 8% and soon to be 8.75%

Please explain how it would benefit anyone beside the restaurant owner?

Traffic is increased at the intersections, the building the restaurant is in pays town real estate taxes whether its leased/rented or not.

I like motorcycles, I agree to Tupelo if you agree we should have a motorcycle hangout so we can drink beer and chat.

Or is something good only if we personally like it.

Anonymous said...

Tupelo's. People go for dinner and/or a drink before and after the shows.

Do they?

We have a flagship movie house with tons of land around it sitting
Why doesnt the town board try to to bring in business to build. fridays?
olive garden? outback, these types of business are proven to make money (pay taxes)

Anonymous said...

I just read a funny article in the Nutfield News. It seems that the Derry Little League announced an estimated $250,000 project to renovate the ball fields at G.H. Hood Middle School. Wherever are they going to get the money? The school district doesn't have it.
They are not asking the town for it. I know, they are going to raise it themselves. What a novel idea! Maybe the Derry Rail Trail Alliance should do the same thing! Town council TAKE BACK OUR MONEY!!

Anonymous said...

Taxpayer,
The restaurant employs people, who then have money to spend. Its all part of the economy. The restaurant also pays rent, and the property owner pays taxes. But I see you like to disagree for the sake of argument. Open a motorcycle bar if you like. Its your right.

Anonymous said...

Anon 6:55

I agree with you 100%.

Every athletic group in Town I can think of raises money on their own when they want projects completed.

The "spandex warriors" shouldn't be any different!

If their "Lycra sisters" to south were able to raise the money, then these guys should be able to do it.

And for some reason I'd be willing to bet that a paved trail in Derry would be used more by non-residents. Probably the same percentage as the dog park; 3% residents, 97% non-residents. (At least I think those were the results of the survey conducted by Parks & Rec.)

Re: Anon 12:50PM - I agree that bringing attacks to the local paper isn't preferred - however I think the article you are referring to was a response to one written by Coyle. Coyle brought the attacks. I believe Wetherbee was defending his position. I think people have a right to defend themselves and/or their positions. If Coyle hadn't chosen to take aim at personal targets during his campaign, a response letter wouldn't have been necessary.

What I wish would happen - but it doesn't seem to be possible in this town, is that all council members would behave like adults at all times, and treat each other with respect.

The discourse that seems to be spewed lately by some council members appears to be unfettered dislike or perhaps frustration with their colleagues. What could be civil and productive discussion of issues instead shows the outward appearance of an adolescent whine-fest. Fairbanks in particular needs to take a lesson on human interaction.

Circle yesterday's date. I never thought I would agree with anything that Al Dimock would say. I watched the ZBA meeting. They seem like nice pople, but overmatched. Al actually made sense in giving a builder a variance to build a duplex in a section of town full of them. His reasoning made sense. Mybe I have been in Derry too long.......

She started Jan 2 '08, making $70K+ benefits. No sign of her since before the holidays and our money is still going out 'the window'.I hope the councilors keep an eye on this situation. Here is where tax $$'s can be save. If she's not performing, get her off our payroll!
