1st in the nation

A well round of applause is in order for the monument committee whom have established Derry as the first in the nation to honor the Iraq and Afghanistan vets with a beautiful monument.
I'm told that it was about a year in the half in the making and the wait was well worth it.

It was a very moving ceremony as we honored all vets and especially our local vets from different era's and different wars. The very first honoree was our very own town treasure Roy Feineuir. Roy fought in WWII and as he was introduced and was there representing all of WWII vets, the crowd had clapped and cheered and there was Roy waving to the crowd. I have had the pleasure to personally know Roy and also Bernie R whom is a vet as well who help put the whole day together. Great job gentlemen.

As the introduction from the Korean war, the Vietnam conflict and the Persian gulf conflicts were in order all the vets stood arm in arm as a band of brothers. This was a moving moment!

We had the Boys scouts lay out the wreaths, we had Pinkerton ROTC help out as well.

We had Senator Sununu, Congresswomen Shea, Senator Letorneau, and Council Chairman Metts.
The Governor gave a brief speech and awarded a proclamation to the town.

What a great day to say thanks to our Vets!!

What's with the three councilors voting down contracts that bring in revenue?

Hello.......

7:10 What's with four councilors voting to have Derry Taxpayers subsidize the surrounding communities? How did those courses in economics go for you 7:10?

BC,
What a great time of the year to start a new business.
Did I read a sign in front of USA SUBS correctly or did I make a mistake? A MR. DOWD opening a USA SUB shop in HOOKSETTE?

Please inform the taxpayers of the wounderful town of Derry that this is not the same Dowd that is the executive director of the DEDC.

So BC. lets talk about supporting our down town businesses. Where do you want to start!!!!!! I WILL TELL YOU WHAT.

I heard there's a great new sub shop opening in HOOKSETTE and lunch is on me!!!!!!

Annon 8:23,

The economic development train is leaving and you're not on it.

A new fabulous new building that the Bensons are building, Leahy partnering with Parkland, Tupelo building a $7 million complex, the interest in "Super Walmart" lot are just a few examples.

My guess is that Jack Dowd has his finger prints on most/all of these deals.

anon 8:23 AM - Spelling actually IS important. if you spell things properly, people might actually pay attention to your point, no matter how ridiculous.

Anon 8:23,

You are correct that it is Jack Dowd opening the USA Subs in Hooksett. Feel free to go to Hooksett for lunch, the rest of us will support our downtown businesses for lunch.

anon 11:10, please provide factual data regarding Mr. Dowd's participation in the Benson deal or the Leahy deal. Also do you know where he was directly involved in the sun rising this morning?

"Finger prints"... interesting choice of words. Usually they carry a negative connotation.

Anon. 8:23,

Apparently your contempt for Mr. Dowd has blinded you to a fact that seems pretty clear to the rest of us.

Since USA Subs is based here in Derry, buying a franchise operation (which the owner of USA is activley marketing) and putting it in a well known commerce destination like Hooksett, Mr. Dowd is spending his own money (and taking all the associated risks in opening a new franchise) to support a local business owner. Who'd a thunk it?

I know opportunities to slam Mr. Dowd are few and far between these days, but clearly there are those who are still intent on it no matter how off base or far fetched.

12:49 I think you missed the point he was trying to make. What does it say about the economic stability in the Town of Derry when the Head of the DEDC doesn't even want to do business in Derry?

Dam that Jack Dowd!

Like Annon 3:16 implies...he should have opened the 2nd USA SUB in Derry! Perhaps right across the street from the first one.

One second, maybe that doesn't make good business sense....

TO ANONYMOUS 12:49,

Thanks for your seeing thru the trees to the forest. I was beginning to think all we had reading these post were spelling bee captains. thank you . Thats the point I was tring to get people to think about not spell.

Did not say Dowd was a bad guy,but if I started and was being paid with funds from Derry,I would not open a business in another town . It does not look politicaly or ethicly correct.

OH CRAP, DID I SPELL MY THOUGHTS WRONG.

Anon 9:07,

As exec. director of the DEDC, which is supposedly working to bring new business to Derry, it seems strange to me that you would open a business franchise where you bring business to another community. No one is suggesting that another franchise of USA Subs be opened across the street, but across town would have been an option.

Did anyone notice that all of these posts are off-topic? Not one person posted about the subject, which seemingly was intended to spark positive feedback about our new town memorial, and maybe even some thoughtful introspection about the lives we have lost to war....

just lots more negative moaning and complaining that really in the scheme of things makes most of us look pretty darn petty...

I guess alas, its no surprise.

anon 10.41,
I'm sorry I have been extremely busy but promise to get back into blogging!

Just for the record...
It's not Jack Dowd that will be opening the new USA Subs in Hooksett, it is his wife, who spent much of her professional career opening some 117 (thats one hudred seventeen) restaurants for the Friendly chain. So she is an experienced businesswomen and resteraunteur.
That said, if Mrs. Dowd were to open her business in Derry, no doubt people would have accused Jack of pulling strings and gettinbg her special treatment.
Be honest, for some of you, Jack cannot do anything without you accusing him of being crooked.
Leave the past in the past and move on.

Damn, we thought you had lost interest in politics.

Ever think about taking up tennis or golf?

Anon 12:55, maybe that its Mrs. Dowd opening the USA Subs, then Mr. Dowd's name shouldn't have appeared on USA Subs sign. You know that it would become an issue simply because he name is on the sign.
