What do Franklin, Nashua, Dover and Derry have in common? Answer: A tax cap! And now a movement is picking up some steam to bring this tax cap to other communities. Derry has had its cap for awhile now and the debates continue on its effectiveness.
Our tax cap only effects the town side of your tax bill. Presently representing $7.50 of our $22.05 over all tax rate.
The tax rate consists of town side, school side, state, and county taxes. Only the town side is held under a tax cap which is tied into the CPI " consumer price index". Over the years, the average has been around 3% and meaning town side taxes may only increase by that CPI index or roughly 3% year.
Londonderry is now looking at bring one to their town and will look for a ballot question to ask its residents if they would install one in their town. Plenty of discussion to go around on pro's and cons.
Last week, I was asked to speak on New Hampshire Public Radio's Exchange program with Laura Noy on a live radio program on the subject.

"debates continue on its effectiveness" really? I haven't heard anyone who doesn't think that our tax cap inhibits town spending (its goal). Please elaborate.
Anon 7:54,
It keeps taxes in check without run away spending. What I find interesting is that communities like Londonderry who want this tax cap to keep taxes from exploding and yet we in Derry have had this tax cap and still people are not happy with this form of holding taxes down. I guess that old saying holds truth
"damned if you do and damned if you don't".
I respectfully disagree. I'm delighted with the tax cap. You are suggesting, I believe, that our dissatisfaction with local taxes implies a dissatisfaction with the tax cap. It doesn't. The airbags work just fine, we just wish the driver needed them less.
MAybe we should look to our neighbors and look at capping all spending at 2.5!?!

No I don't think so, more like a very rational act of self defense. Politicians will vote to take what is mine and give it to their friends. Defending my property against thieves is very rational.
I listened to the show. Nice job BC. You were very reasonable. Regarding your point on the schools... any ideas on how we can get this under control? You folks on the council are forced to watch the pennies while the school board is unconstrained.
School Board isn't unconstrained ... you vote don't you? The Majority approves their budget don't they? Get a clue.
Yes you are right 6:18, we can either vote for their budget or vote for their budget (+ or - 2%). Ah, reminds me of the old country, "I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R."
