Here's your chance!

Next Tuesday night at 7pm is your chance to come to the public hearing on the towns budget. Its usually not that well attended in prior years and we always hear of complaints during the year about our taxes.

Keep in mind that we councilors only control the towns side of taxes which at this time represents $7.50 of your $22.05 per 1000 tax bills.

1 out of every 3 dollars you send in for property taxes goes to town side services such as police protection, fire protection, snow plowing and grounds maintenance, capital projects, recreation.
library's ( and I'm sure I'm leaving something off this list)
Now is the time to come to Tues nights meeting 4/22 at town hall to speak your mind!
Hope to see many faces at this meeting!!!

Off topic but if anyones going to the Visioning Mainstreet meeting Monday night they might want to bring up how to keep the current businesses on Mainstreet from leaving. Since I had Friday off from work and with the good weather I decided to walk Mainstreet. Half is empty and in talking with the few left, they're struggling and most likely on their way out. Unless the plan is not to support the few left to force them all out and start with a clean slate we're going to end up with a vacant mainstreet except for Sabatinos, Maryanns and The Depot Restaurant. None of the ones I talked to even knew about the meeting Monday night. I would've thought the town would give them notice. I don't know about anyone else but it doesn't appeal to me to sit outside the Depot Restaurant for a nice meal and look at vacant, run down buildings. BC, wasn't it about a year ago you said the Carnation place at the corner was going to be torn down? I don't get why doing something with the Mainstreet drags on and on, year after year, meeting after meeting, study after study, consultant firm after consultant firm. Course I couldn't talk with the owners of Broadway Pets, I sure do wish they'd post their hours of operation, after all they've been there for 15+ years.

BC,
How are you ?
Sorry I could not meet the many new faces at the budget workshop or public meeting on spending. My boss dont care about Derry's bottom line just his own.

This is just a thought that I had. Before we cut any police or firefighters or services we absolutly need, what the hell does our tax essessor do for his 100 k package with all the bennies.

We all know that with all the forclosers and no building going on in Derry for the next 4 to 8 years and prices on existing homes tanking your not going to see much of an essessor walking around .

In fact I think the last couple of times the town essessed taxpayers property , wasn't it done by an outside concern. So why do we need this guy hanging around city hall just to make a phone call every couple of years to a company to do his JOB.

Sorry if I sound stupid . I did not start off my high school years in a big fancy wazoo freshman building. Why can't our administrator pick the phone up and make that call and get rid of what we dont need?

Anon 1119: We all know the downtown needs help. I think the restaurant owners should start out by helping themselves. I got back into town the other day from dinner in Manchester and wanted to go to Sabatinos for a drink. My plans were foiled when I found out that they close at 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Come on guys, give me a break! 10pm? That's pretty lame. I have been there for lunch and the food was great. They need to rethink their business hours.

This is just another example of why Derry is not a place to be. You have great possibilites but some businesses don't take advantage of it. I alway thought Boston was lame for closing at 1 am when every other city closes far later; but this is far worse.

So like everyone else in Derry I found myself a T-Bones and the Top of the Hill. These places are great too, don't get me wrong. It would have been nice to go somewhere else for a change though!

27/4/08 12:05 PM. Why go to Manchester for dinner when you could have done business in Down town Derry. You could have went to Sabatinos and asked them why the close at 10:00. Ask the merchants if you are so concerned then you will get answers.

Anon 1:29,
Having grown up in Derry and living here as an adult, I often like to leave Town and go elsewhere for pleasure. Besides, the wife has a thing for some of the restaurants in the city...
