Proposal will be costly!

This just in.... The proposed elderly exemption increases that the ADT and Councilors Coyle, Fairbanks and Carney have put their names on will cost the town dearly. Estimates that are being provided are in the range of upwards of over $425,000. And with the projected budget for FY 09 coming in with "level funding" for a third straight year, budgets projections have come in with a negative -$4000 without the proposal.
To make up another 1/2 million dollars? Where do they think that will be coming from? Either they ( Coyle, Fairbanks and Carney) come up with "cutting other parts of the budget" to offset this amount or maybe they want the rest of the town to pay an additional .20/.25 cents per 1000 of value of ones home IN ADDITION to what ever increase would of been approved without the proposal.
Like I said earlier folks, hold on to your wallets or be prepared to go without such services as road maintenance, recreation could be cut, maybe police and fire positions will get eliminated OR...
as stated in the findings, they opt for both tax shifting and eliminating funds from a level funded budget.
The report also states that with home values possibly going down. ( which i can tell you they have being in the business)- That the Coyle Fairbanks and Carney AND ADT proposal may have a very bad effect on the town.
Don't fall for it folks-It will not be pretty- And I don't want to be the one who says I told you so a few years down the road. Its to get seats on the council and its obvious to see.
Alas, maybe we can ride bikes down the paved path for another 400K?
Oh my! please please focus in on what they are proposing and the damage that will come with it.

BC "cutting other parts of the budget???..." now you are beginning to make some sense!
is it too late to reclaim the money foolishly spent on the CLD exit 4 fiasco?....how about the excessive fees paid to attorney boutin to untangle the knots tied thanks political turf protection?....

perhaps we should recognize and rejoice that the proposed fire department taj mahal was actually a penny saved, and guess what, our town is not burning down.
we should also take this time to evaluate why derry needs such an enormous fleet of town cars and trucks. etc. etc. etc....
finally, it behoves us all to take a close look at the biggest tax burden of all, the moody school budget expansion in the face of declining enrollments.

PEOPLE! Stop focusing on what you beleive the mistakes of the past are. Stop the mistakes of the future. Don't let the ADT and the three amigos get away with this scam against the Derry taxpayers!

...a pathetic response from annon 8:05...he/she/it does not offer one single budget cut that would enable the proposed exemption to work.

he/she/it represents all that is wrong about derry...just complain...don't get involved...don't offer constructive solutions...just complain...

ps to bc: i am a little dissapointed that you didn't hold the adt accountable to their own principles (their 12 questions) - that would have uncovered the indisputable fact that they have no principles....they stand for nothing except getting elected...one example....compare the principles of government of the left of center demy like carney and the of-the-edge libertarian Hopfgarten...they have publically acknowledged they almost always disagree about everything.

when are people going to align themselves based on their ideas and philosphies of government not based on getting elected?!

Interesting to read the letter to the editor in Friday’s Derry News. The writer, who is a Derry senior and 35 year resident proposes that we offer tax incentives for seniors to stay based solely on age and not income, and then goes on to say that we should offer more activities for the seniors.

He also talks of the benefits of living in senior trailer and modular home parks in the southern part of the U.S. If we’re going to start trying to compete with the likes of Florida and South Carolina, we might as well just pack it in now.

As to the activities he mentions, I’d be curious too see if the majority of Derry’s seniors would rather have this tax proposal which many of them may still not qualify for, or some kind of senior center which has been talked about for some time now and that ALL seniors would be able to take advantage of. With the tax cap and current budget situation we certainly wouldn’t be able to afford both.

I also agree with d3 that we need to start focusing on the future of Derry and stop dwelling on things that over and done with for better or for worse.
