Its a sweep! The people of Derry have spoken! All three winners are 4A supporters and TIF supporters. Not only does this mean that the town can move forward, having a 5-2 Council gives the majority a "super majority" and that means we can get some things done for the Town of Derry.
I want to thank everyone in Dist #4 who voted for me. Thank you very much! The opposition brought their "A" team to try and stop me, Ms Fairbanks, Mr Coyle, MS Rose, Mr Cooper and even Doug Newell was seen at Hood most of the day.
But I think at the end of the day the good people of Derry were smart enough to be disgusted with their " smear" campaign.

Congratulations to you and the other successful candidates.
You now have a window of opportunity to get things done for the good of this Town.
Time as always is fleeting so please get to it with out delay.
Congrats to you Brian, Dave, and Joel. I was very happy to see that the townspeople didn't believe what the ADT was selling. I'm hopeful for this town again.
First, congratulations to all the winners. I look forward to seeing how this council works towards making Derry better. Here's to hoping that each councilor, no matter what "side" they are on focuses on doing what is best for the overall community.
As for your comment "the people have spoken". It seems to me the vote count indicates a town that is pretty divided. I didn't see any landslide victories in the Town Council races. The fact that these races were close shows that people want a council that will start doing the work of the town and stop all the foolish bickering. As for your win in District 4 Brian, it seems that Joe D was right at the last town council meeting when he joked about he and Al splitting the vote and giving you the victory. While you still would have won by a handful of votes, if Al had been smart enough to step aside it would have been a pretty close race in your District too.
Yes congratulations! It feels like a change in the wind. I am actually looking forward to the next year with bright hopes.
Anon 10:01, You are right, it would have been nice to have more of a turn out, but no matter how close the race, a win is a win, and a win means the people have spoken.
I am curious though why you would have felt that AD should have been the one to step down. why not Joe D? At least AD does the time, gets involved and shows up to council meetings. Kudos to AD to stepping up to the plate and doing what he felt was right.
BC, please be gracious in victory. No need to sling dirt at the losing side. Take the high road, which is rarely done on this blog.

So 2,139 total votes cast out of a population of 22,932 adults over 20 years old in Derry (according to 2008 census). That is a pathetic 9.3% of people who care enough about the town they live in to take the time to vote.
Also interesting that 151 of the people who did vote did not cast a vote for the Councilor at Large seat. Only 1,988 votes cast in that race. Unless there was a "hanging chad" problem.
Are the ballots tabulated manually or by the machines or both?
I'd like to hear from the new councilors and understand if, as you indicate, they intend to simply vote in lock step with you and 2 other councilors in a "super majority" or if they intend to actually review the issues.
From watching the council over the past few months it seemed to me that councilors like Benson, Carney, Metts had been voting after giving thought to issues. Let's hope the 2 newly elected folks continue that practice and don't just fall in with the us vs. them mentality that seems to exist among the other 4 returning councilors.
Al Dimmock will unfortunately see 80 votes as a mandate by 'Da People of Dairy" but DiChairo is strangling his Al Dimmock Teddy right now. Thank God Brian would have won by a few votes because Old Al would be in the stocks right now.
However Brian please do not dignify Maureen Rose by taking the attitude in your post. Don’t sink to the level of Fairbanks and Coyle. What you wrote just makes you look small and petty just as Maureen’s classless comment at the end of her usual hysterical interrogatory at the last Council meeting. Why do you want to go there? You can only lose and have nothing to gain engaging a shrill little harpie that is used as a pawn by Coyle and Newell.

Brian I realize it is difficult to be bashed by Coyle and his minions. Coyle is the epitome of a bad pol. If he drove a Hummer we would all know what inadequacies he suffered from. But throwing mud at his underlings is beneath you. Suck it up and turn the other cheek. Kick Coyles butt through your leadership at getting progress done in Derry. That alone will crush him.
I do want to give credit to both AL Dimmock and Joe DiChario for running a good campaign. Both were very good at sticking to the issues and not using any negative tactics! I do have respect for both gentlemen for keeping it focused!
"Close races" is pathetic spin. Its the same type of spin they use on issues.

Yes, there was one very close race but folks the other two races were landslides by todays political measures.

Whether it is yourself Brian, or any of the other FAIR councilors, please put someone in the Chair's seat who will be fair to everyone in town.
You have one on the council who wants nothing less than to be unfair, and another who will do the bidding of the councilor beforementioned. I need not go any further as to who those councilors may be.
Do the right thing. Those who are there now have the opportunity to make us proud and lead us in the right direction. Do what you think is right and do what you think you MUST do to prove the naysayers wrong by making us proud of our vote.

Consensus. Everyone wants it but nobody gets it. We settle for majority rule.
On a federal level the government can’t put a foot right. Obama looks like the Captain of “the ship of fools”.
Now we have majority rule in Derry. The 2 counter paddling councilors have been rendered moot (one wishes mute in the case of Fairbanks).
However, the potential for the comparison to the Obama Administration and it’s unproductive history is real.

Coyle, you better participate with the Council this term or I will personally lead the fight to impeach/recall you. If your snotty nosed attitude last Tuesday is an indication of what is to come, you and I will be having very public words in regards to your stepping down.
You hasve been on the losing side in town government throughout your service. Get it through your thick head that it might well be a refection of you and your ideas and not a problem with the town. Get over it and participate or leave. Sitting on the council with a sour expression continually stating "you guys can do what you want but..." is unprofessional and unacceptable. Keep it up and ai will love to lead the charge to ride you out on a rail.
What's up with the Dimock/Fairbanks exchange on Tuesday?
Why not invest in an exit 3a too? The industrial land and roads are already in place. It would also solve the traffic congestion down town and would actually help business if there was less traffic. Our residents are weaving through the back streets to go around the down town traffic, and who wants to fight traffic to do some shopping? Along RT 93 towns with 30,000 + people have at least two exits while Derry has none, (that are actually in the town.) There is no easy way to get to our industrial land or our homes. A town as big as ours warrants an exit 3A and 4A. There is a long way between exit 3 and 4 and a lot of homes in between. Traffic congestion is ridiculous at exits 3 and 4. I am sure a lot of Derry residents are using exit 3, along with Windham, North Salem, Atkinson, Hamspstead, the whole 111 corridor. The town wants to develop Rt 28 and bring sewerage there, but there is no access to the highway, which limits the potential. Why isn't anybody talking about an exit 3A? The town should have 3A and 4A if it is serious about growing the tax base. Why not let Londonderry focus on 4a and Derry focus on 3a. A 3A seems like it would be much more beneficial to the development of the Derry 28 corridor and to the residents of the town who commute. Maybe this should be a fresh new idea for the council to discuss. Any thoughts anybody?

Before I do however, I must say that I feel horrible that the ADT has gained so little traction in this town, with the failure of getting a majority on the Charter Commission AND the failure of ADT's... Ooops.. I mean "Friends of Derry Taxpayers'" candidates to EARN a spot on the Town Council in this past election...
My question is...
Do you really think that Microsoft charges you $200 for a disc that costs them $.10 to make??.... or do you just hate the DFD so much that you would use such a foolish example when arguing against an EMS contract that makes money for the town?

I was hoping you would be able to get&give some info regarding the school funding dilema. As I understand Derry is slated to lose $7 million dollars in funding
( =the closing of one school). I have read the our reps woud rather the people of Derry NOT make our voice heard against this. What is happening in our town gov't and as a councilor who& what would you recommend we as a town do to try and alleviate this burden that will be upon us in 2 years? How much would more are we to pay in taxes. I really like this town and believe it is a great community for our children to be raised, but we can't have our taxes rising to unbelievable rates.
What is the average Derry tax paying resident to do.
I know this isn't on topic but would really welcome your opinion and anyone elses.

Been weeks Brian since you updated the blog. Exactly since your last gloat on the elections. Since that time we have seen the plans for development on Exit 5 and seen a development plan much like I outlined to Saint Janet Fairbanks regarding a similiar development at Burr Ridge IL. Guess what? If and when Exit 4A is every built there will be no need for retail development in Derry. And who do we have to thank? Janet Fairbanks. Janet "if it ain't built in West Derry I will not support it" Fairbanks. Janet "trees for the dump and Mo Rose" Fairbanks. Derry fiddled while development opportunities went elsewhere (which Janet "smartest woman on the planet possessed with inner thoughts of why Walmart would not build due to the economic downturn" Fairbanks said would never happen. Well we won't get any tax revenue out of Hooksets development but at least good shopping will be close. Will the last shopper to leave downtown Derry please switch off the streetlights?
